Research and Public Health Priorities in the Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) Region: Pandemic and Future Preparedness Meeting

How the meeting advanced the mission of the agency: The purpose of this meeting is to bring together federal partners, CDC, and NIH, along with regional health partners including Ministries of Health, Ministries of Agriculture, and external partners such as WHO to discuss lessons learned from the COVID 19 pandemic and discuss planning and joint priorities for future health threats. This conference was first envisioned in 2020, during the CDC solicitation process for CARES-Act funding proposals. It serves multiple purposes aligned with the agency's mission. First, it advances the collaboration and joint priorities between HHS agencies (CDC and NIH) invested in global health security and helping to improve public health capacities in the MENA region. Second, it provides an excellent way for CDC to provide visible leadership in bringing together a variety of partners from across a broad region, indicating commitment to the region and learning from countries on how we can best collaborate and jointly plan to address health threats. Lastly, it helps to fulfill one of the overarching goals of the regional office – which is to help build and enhance broad-based public health capacity throughout the region and thus be able to better respond to emerging health threats. The meeting provides an opportunity to share information, share lessons learned, identify priorities, network, identify opportunities for additional collaboration, etc.

Description of Exceptional circumstances: CDC will have the responsibility to provide travel for an estimated 20- 25 non-federal regional experts to this event. Consistent with applicable travel regulations and policies, travel covered by CDC is expected to include roundtrip airfare from home country to Dubai, UAE, any applicable visa fees, lodging for three nights, ground transfer from Dubai airport to lodging, ground transfer from lodging to Dubai airport, ground transfer from lodging to and from event (if the lodging is in a separate location than the host venue), and M&IE. This conference is critical to bring together key stakeholders from across the global to discuss lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and how strategies could be improved for future public health emergencies in support of the global health security goals.

The Union World Conference on Lung Health 2023

Every year, this conference brings together health care professionals, policymakers, clinicians, government officials, TB program directors, subject matter experts, researchers, community activists, students, and other prominent figures from both developed countries and developing countries (over 125 countries) to tackle issues related to TB, lung health, and other health areas that affect people living in poverty. CDC's participation to the conference directly supports GHC, NCHHSTP, and NCEZID's mission to prevent and control TB and to reduce TB rates in the US and abroad as it will allow CDC staff to interact and share/discuss with public health officials and global health partners recent important TB scientific findings.

Description of Exceptional circumstances: This non-CDC hosted conference exceeds $150,000 due to travel, GTE, per diem and registration costs for estimated large number of attendees. The Union World Conference on Lung Health is a critical scientific conference for the Global Health Center's tuberculosis branch and the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine in NCEZID, as well as to maintain subject matter expertise and sharing of scientific knowledge.

Joint APHL/ISNS 2023 Newborn Screening Symposium

This newborn screening symposium is the single, most important opportunity for NSMBB each year to inform the entire domestic newborn screening community about (1) CDC's innovative laboratory method improvements that will improve their testing workflows, (2) new reference materials that we have developed for various newborn screening conditions that are available for their use to assure accuracy in newborn testing, (3) our investigations that address testing challenges such as unexplained variations in their biomarker levels that may be impacted by environmental factors, (4) new opportunities for training that will allow them to make improvements in laboratory practice and competencies for new and emerging biochemical and molecular testing platforms. Attendance at this meeting will also allow NSMBB to discuss innovations being made on the ED3N (Enhancing Data-driven Disease Detection in Newborns) Data Modernization Initiative Project, that is being created to improve newborn screening result interpretation in state programs using enhanced data interoperability, data processing, analytics, and visualization techniques. 2024 United States Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA)

How the meeting advanced the mission of the agency: Similar to last year's focus on Puerto Rico and Latinx populations, the organizer leaned into this year's theme "A Love Letter to Black Women" to celebrate and honor Black women (cis and trans). The conference highlights Black women across movements, from activists to women living with HIV, national advocates, community voices, federal leaders, health department staff, healthcare workers, researchers, and women-focused organizations. The opening plenary will tell their stories and acknowledge their contributions. Their experiences were highlighted in workshops, institutes, posters, and special events. There was a section of the exhibit hall for small businesses owned and operated by Black women- The conference featured over 120 institutes, workshops and posters addressing issues in biomedical HIV prevention, aging, service delivery and telehealth, stigma, and the next steps in Ending the Epidemic. USCHA remains the conference to attend to experience the widest range of HIV-related topics, the most diverse attendees, the best exhibit hall, and most unique plenary sessions.

OPTIONS XII for the Control of Influenza

It includes presentations on influenza prevention, control and treatment, seasonal influenza, pandemic preparedness, advances in the basic science, control, and prevention, and domains related to virology, veterinary medicine, human medicine, and public health policy. Given that Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 are both respiratory diseases that have caused pandemics, it is important to share lessons learned, cutting-edge scientific innovations, and ways to adapt influenza activities to build upon the gains established due to COVID-19. To facilitate these interactions, Options presentations and session topics are designed to maximize the opportunities for informal discussions and exchange of ideas between participants from academia, government agencies, and industry. It is critical that CDC exchange information in many of the scientific categories, but in particular pathogenesis, transmission, virus-host cell interactions, zoonotic influenza, novel treatment and prevention strategies, universal vaccines, antivirals and therapeutics, non-pharmaceutical interventions, pan-coronavirus vaccines, genomics, vaccine effectiveness, respiratory disease surveillance, modeling and forecasting, burden of disease for influenza and dual epidemics, and pandemic preparedness to name just a few.
