Notices to Readers NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical HazardsCDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently revised the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (1).* The Pocket Guide provides general industrial hygiene information for 398 chemicals or substance groupings that are found in the workplace and have existing Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. The information in the Pocket Guide is taken from the NIOSH/OSHA Occupational Health Guidelines for Chemical Hazards; NIOSH criteria documents and Current Intelligence Bulletins; and recognized references in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, and analytical chemistry. Data are presented in tabular form to provide a rapid, convenient source of information about general industrial hygiene and medical monitoring practices. The Pocket Guide includes chemical structures or formulas, identification codes, synonyms, current exposure limits, chemical and physical properties, flammability/combustibility ratings, specific gravities, incompatibilities and reactivities, measurement methods, respirator selections, signs and symptoms of exposure, and procedures for emergency treatment.
