Arthritis, a leading cause of disability, affects an estimated 40 million persons in the United States and may affect nearly 60 million by 2020. This year's theme is "Stay Active with Arthritis Through Physical Activity and EducationSM". The Arthritis Foundation promotes the messages of the 1996 Surgeon General's report on physical activity and health by emphasizing that regular physical activity can help persons with arthritis control pain and disability. The foundation also encourages all persons to build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints through regular physical activity.
