* Per 1,000 live births and fetal deaths. In 2005, the fetal mortality rate in the United States was 6.2 fetal deaths of >20 weeks' gestation per 1,000 live births and fetal deaths. From 1990 to 2003, the rate declined 17% because of a decrease in late fetal deaths (>28 weeks' gestation); the fetal mortality rate for 20--27 weeks' gestation did not decline.
