The figure above is a bar chart showing that in 2014, 7% of renters aged 18–39 years assessed their health as fair or poor compared with 4% of homeowners. Among adults aged 40–64 years, 23% of renters reported fair or poor health compared with 11% of homeowners. Among adults aged ≥65 years, 34% of renters reported fair or poor health compared with 19% of homeowners. For both renters and homeowners, the percentage of adults with fair or poor health increased with increasing age.

Estimates are based on household interviews of a sample of the noninstitutionalized U.S. civilian population and are derived from the National Health Interview Survey family core component.
